Memorial Day Stay-ca

Did Memorial Day weekend creep up on you like it crept up on me!? Whew! Is Spring really almost over already??

How are you kicking off the unofficially start to Summer?

For those of us who didn’t catch any last minute flight deals, let’s not get too jealous as we sift through our FB friends’ vaca photos. :-( You can actually have a lot of fun and save some money by staying close to home this weekend. Here are a few ideas for making the most out of a Memorial Day weekend staycation:

  • Day Trippin’:  Take a drive to a local park or beach. Sightsee, picnic or just lay out and relax. The weather is supposed to be beautiful. Locally, venture down by the Delaware or try a historical tour of Philadelphia.
  • Parade:  Most towns will be hosting some kind of local celebration with a parade and maybe even a mini festival with some vendors. This could be a good opportunity for some family friendly fun.
  • Grill & Chill:  I’ll definitely be dusting off the lawn chairs and firing up the bar-b at some point this weekend. Why cook inside with such beautiful weather?
  • Sunday night party:  With no work on Monday, you can stay out late and drink as much as you want on Sunday night! Check out that Sunday night party you’ve been hearing about. Locally, try Random at Walnut Room.
  • Start planning your 4th of July trip: Get on top of it early and don’t miss out on your next shot at a weekend getaway!

Honestly, I can’t really complain about not having plans this weekend, because I’m hitting the road right after the holiday for some fun in the sun without the crowds. :)

Have a fun and safe holiday weekend!

Playoff Playtime

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock somewhere, I’m sure you know that we are knee deep into the NBA playoffs. Woohooo! Right?

Regardless of what team you’re rooting for (or whether you’re a bball fan at all), you can’t let this prime socializing time pass you by!

Whenever a mag rolls out one of those “best places to meet a man” list, sports bars seems to rank among the top of them. In real life I find that sports bars can be hit or miss. These days, a lot more people are opting to enjoy the game at home in front of their 50” plasmas where they can actually hear the action and eat and drink for free.

But if there’s anytime to give a sports bar a shot, it’s times like this – when the games and the crowds really start to get good. It’s the perfect time to take a tour of your local sports bars and check out the scene.

In my area? There’s Houlihans, Buffalo Wild Wings and Alstarz, just to name a few.

If you’ve already snagged a cutie and can skip this round of man hunting season, then this is a great time to get in some bonding time with the girls while your guy is glued to the TV screen. Dinner and a movie, anyone??

Rittenhouse Row Spring Festival

One of my fav events is happening in Philly this weekend – The Rittenhouse Row Spring Festival!

The Rittenhouse Row Spring Festival is an annual event held in one of the poshest areas of downtown Philadelphia. One of the busiest and coolest streets in the City is blocked off and stores and restaurants open up their doors and set up shop outside, most offering specials and discounts. The festival showcases local vendors of all types and features tons of food, fashion and entertainment, including a special section just for the kiddies.

This year’s festival takes place this Saturday, May 19th from 12-5 pm and takes place right on Walnut Street from Broad to 19th.

This is one of Philadelphia’s most popular festivals and it usually attracts more than 50,000 people, so you might want to consider taking the train in (the Suburban Station stop is just a couple blocks away).

I actually stumbled upon the festival a couple years ago when I was downtown for a hair appointment. Lucky me!

And it’s looking like the weather will be perfect for it this year – 80 degrees and sunny. A great way to celebrate Spring and warm up for Memorial Day festivities!

Kanye West at the Vanity Fair kickoff part for...

Love him or hate him, there’s no denying that Kanye West is highly creative, highly successful and extremely confident. His music has some of the best lines, especially when you’re looking for something upbeat and motivational. He drops little nuggets of wisdom and has so many different ways of basically saying “I’m the greatest. Are you trying to be your greatest?”

Here are a few Kanyeisms (inspirational lines and quotes) that definitely embody the anywherefab philosophy:

  • “I believe in myself like a five-year-old believes in himself. They say look at me, look at me! Then they do a flip in the backyard. It won’t even be that amazing, but everyone will be clapping for them.”
  • “If you have the opportunity to play this game of life you need to appreciate every moment. A lot of people don’t appreciate the moment until it’s passed.”
  • “People always say that you can’t please everybody. I think that’s a cop-out. Why not attempt it? ‘Cause think of all the people you will please if you try.”
  • “Why, if someone is good in one field can they not be accepted or given the slightest opportunity to express and be creative in other fields?”
  • “I’m on a pursuit of awesomeness. Excellence is the bare minimum.”
  • “For me giving up is way harder than trying.”
  • “Shoot for the stars, so if you fall you land on a cloud.”
  • “Everything I’m not makes me everything I am.”
  • “That that don’t kill me, can only make me stronger.”
  • “They say ya additude determines ya laditude…”
  • “If you know you’re the best it only makes sense for you to surround yourself with the best. No exceptions.”

And my fav: “Believe in your flyness…conquer your shyness!”

What’s your fav?

My Something New

So, I started this whole “get out and try new things” thing last summer and what can I say? I guess I really embraced it!

As I told my friends and fam about my new bf, the conversation generally went something like this:

Me: I’m dating a white guy

Them: What!?

Me: Yup

Them: Is he Jewish?

Me: No

Them: Italian?

Me: No

Them: *blank stare*

Me: He’s Caucasian, European, just white *blank stare*

Pause

Them: Ok. Is he a cool white guy?

Me: Yup, really cool. *smile*

With that out of the way, they got into normal questions, like how we met, where he’s from, what he does, etc.

Sounds So Sweet

My friend Keva is my hero of the moment. Not only is she beautiful and talented (I always dreamed of having her singing voice), but now she’s a full blow entrepreneur! Keva did what most of us only dream and talk about – she left her day job to chase her dreams. And she couldn’t be happier. Although it was scary to even think about at first, she knew she had to do it. How could she not give herself the chance to be her best and make the most of her talents? And as a friend, fan and customer, I’m so glad she did!

Keva left her full-time gig in the hospitality industry to focus her time and attention on performing and growing her business, The Sweet Love Company. Sweet Love is a catering company specializing in contemporary and stylish desserts and dessert stations. She can make cake pops to fit any theme you dream up! One of my favs is this circus themed dessert station she did for a kid’s bday party:

I can’t wait to have a kid so I can copy this!

Keva came to visit recently and I was in heaven as I munched on cake pops and listened to her sing around the house. Mmmmm… (I try not to join in and ruin it, but sometimes I can’t help myself)

What would you be willing to give up to pursue your dreams? Would you be brave enough to make the leap if you discovered your passion?

TravelFab: Sin City!

Fab group of girls from Boston ready to do some sinning in Sin City. I just happened to match them and they let me jump in a pic. Owwww!

I’m back from vacation!! And Vegas was amazing!

It wasn’t my first time there, but it was my longest stay and I did a lot more exploring this time around. It was also a lot different, because this time I went with the bf instead of the girls. From pool parties to rooftop parties and Cirque du Soleil to glow in the dark mini-golf, we tried our best to check out all the craziness Vegas had to offer. And the weather was perfect for it – warm enough for the pool but not too hot to walk the strip without passing out.

Mixx dancer hanging from the ceiling

Last weekend I ventured out to Atlantic City for Shaun’s bday celebration. I love Shaun and I love AC, but I was very close to turning around and heading home when the rain starting pouring down. What kept me motivated and focused on the mission was the fact that Jermaine Dupree was DJing. I knew that meant an amazing party with great music and I had my dancing shoes ready to go.

Once I was safely inside the Borgata, I got sucked by the crowd and energy at the place and I was glad I didn’t let the torrential downpour scare me off. Mixx was jam packed and JD definitely lived up to my high expectations!

JD DJing (my pics came out terribly bc of the lights but I swear that's him! lol)

The next day, I dragged myself outta bed and got some good shopping done. The outing ended up being a great warm-up for my trip to Vegas!

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc./Trenton Alumnae Chapter/24 Karat Gold/Spring 2009

Three years ago today, I became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

Most people think of fraternities and sororities as something you get involved with (and leave behind) in your undergrad years. But for historically black organizations, that’s certainly not the case. Alumnae chapters have a strong presence and accept new members who are beyond their college years – sometimes wellll beyond. Lol

For me, there were many benefits to joining a sorority as an adult. Not only do I love the sisterly bonding and good work we do as Sorors, but I appreciate the boost it gave to my social life given that I live in a small town. It certainly help cut through some of the difficulties of adult friending and allowed me to meet a lot of great people. When we get together we work hard and play hard!

Greek life may not be your thing, but wherever you live, I’m sure there are plenty of local civic, social and professional organizations that might appeal to you. Find them online, learn more about what they do, attend events, get to know members and give it a shot.

Happy Deltaversary 24K!

Where You’re At or Who You’re With?

Tags

, , ,

Remember the old saying – “It’s not where you’re at, but who you’re with?” As someone who has lived in and been to my share of random places and still managed to have a good time, I’d have to say that there’s something to that.

You can live in the greatest place on earth, but without people to share your time and experiences with, would you fully enjoy it?

I’m sure there are some people who would say, “Yes!.” They would rather be in NYC starting fresh with no friends than be in their small hometown surrounded by childhood friends. Then there are those people living in beautiful cities full of fun stuff to do, but with no one to do it with, longing to be somewhere where everyone knows their name. The grass is always greener…

My suggestion, if you find yourself in either of these situations (Big City w/o friends or small town w/friends), is to:

1. Make the most of where you are, even if you don’t know anyone in the area. You’ll meet people along the way as you explore and gradually build a social circle. Don’t let your time in an amazing place go to waste!

2. Make the most of who you’re with, even if you don’t really wanna be in the place you’re at. It will make things a lot more bearable to at least be spending time with good people. It will also help you keep up with local events and fill up your social calendar.

Now if you’re in a town you don’t like and without friends, uhhh… that may call for a little traveling. lol

For you, is it more about where you’re at or who you’re with?
